UMG Seeks to Dismiss Drake’s Legal Petition in Texas Over Streaming Dispute

January 25, 2025 - by Sevav Vincent - Leave a Comment

Drake’s legal confrontation with Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify continues to make waves, with the rapper’s latest move being a petition filed in Texas. This action follows his previous petition in New York, which he withdrew shortly before re-filing a more formal lawsuit. The lawsuit targets the streaming platforms, alleging that they conspired to inflate the streaming numbers for Kendrick Lamar’s track “Not Like Us.” According to Drake, UMG and Spotify collaborated to manipulate the streaming data, a claim that has set the stage for a high-profile legal battle.

In response to the petition filed in Texas, UMG has made a strategic move to have it dismissed. On Friday, the music giant filed a 144-page motion to challenge Drake’s legal actions. In their response, UMG denies any allegations of misconduct and argues that Drake’s legal filings are nothing more than a retaliatory move. They have asked the court to dismiss the petition and also seek to halt the discovery process and any associated legal fees, effectively refusing to foot the bill for what they perceive as a baseless lawsuit.

UMG’s legal team goes further, accusing Drake of using the legal system as a tool of strategic retaliation against the company and others involved. In their filing, they suggest that the rapper’s actions are part of an effort to limit the distribution of Lamar’s diss track. The music label is pushing for a quick resolution to the case, hoping that the petition will be tossed out before it gains any further traction.

Despite the legal setbacks, Drake’s intentions remain clear: he aims to uncover what he believes to be unfair practices in the streaming industry. By challenging both UMG and Spotify, he seeks transparency and accountability over how streaming numbers are reported and manipulated. As his legal team presses on with the lawsuit, the case promises to bring more scrutiny to the often murky world of digital music distribution.

While this battle rages on in court, Drake’s influence in the music industry remains undiminished. His ongoing lawsuit against UMG for defamation adds another layer to an already complex situation. With both parties preparing for what could be a lengthy legal fight, the outcome of this case may have lasting effects on how artists and music labels navigate the digital age of streaming.
