Def Leppard opened their 2025 tour with a lively performance at Feria Estatal De León in Mexico on January 18—but longtime guitarist Vivian Campbell was notably absent. Instead, John Zocco, a touring guitarist who’s worked behind the scenes with the band for years, stepped in to fill Campbell’s shoes for the night.
Frontman Joe Elliott addressed the audience during the concert, explaining Campbell’s absence by saying the 62-year-old musician is currently recovering from cancer treatment. Elliott thanked the crowd for their support and introduced Zocco, who took over guitar duties for the night. Unfortunately, this won’t be the only show Campbell is expected to miss, as he is also slated to sit out another performance in September while his recovery continues.
Campbell has faced a long and difficult battle with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. First diagnosed in 2013, he began treatment after noticing persistent symptoms, including a chronic cough. He underwent chemotherapy and initially entered remission later that same year, though his relief was short-lived. The cancer returned several times over the years, requiring more aggressive treatment plans, including a stem cell transplant.
In 2023, Campbell opened up about his ongoing fight during an episode of the Lymphoma Voices podcast. He described his experience with cancer as an ongoing “Whac-a-Mole” challenge, with the illness periodically resurfacing. Despite the uncertainty, he’s continued to live his life with determination and has stayed committed to performing with Def Leppard whenever his health allows.
Since 2015, Campbell has been undergoing immunotherapy, specifically with the drug pembrolizumab, which he joined through a clinical trial. Though doctors initially recommended radiation and chemotherapy, Campbell opted for this newer treatment path, which has helped him maintain a relatively active lifestyle. His candidness and strength have made him a beloved figure not only among fans but also within the cancer survivor community. As he continues his recovery, fans worldwide remain hopeful for his return to the stage later in the tour.
