UK Urges India to Cooperate with Canada’s Legal Process Amid Diplomatic Tensions

London, October 17, 2024— As diplomatic tensions between India and Canada escalate over the alleged involvement of Indian agents in the killing of a Canadian Sikh activist, the UK government has called on India to cooperate fully with Canada’s legal process.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office emphasized the importance of respecting international norms and due process. “The rule of law is a cornerstone of democracy. We urge all parties, including India, to engage with Canada’s legal process to ensure transparency and accountability in this matter,” the spokesperson said.

The diplomatic row stems from allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Indian government agents were involved in the June killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and prominent Sikh separatist leader. India has vehemently denied these claims, calling them “absurd” and accusing Canada of harboring separatist elements.

The UK’s call for cooperation adds another layer to the growing international concern, as India’s relations with several Western nations, including Canada and the UK, have come under increased scrutiny. UK officials are particularly worried about the potential for further destabilization within the Commonwealth, of which both India and Canada are key members.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has reportedly raised the issue with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, stressing the importance of a transparent investigation. The UK is also mindful of its large Indian diaspora and strong bilateral ties with India, but it remains committed to advocating for international cooperation in upholding justice.

Canada has already expelled a top Indian diplomat, and India retaliated by doing the same. As tensions rise, the UK and other countries are pushing for dialogue, hoping to prevent a deeper rift between two critical international partners.

India has yet to formally respond to the UK’s call for cooperation, but the situation remains fluid, with analysts speculating that further diplomatic moves may be on the horizon.

### Background:
The issue at hand has drawn global attention as it touches on sensitive topics such as political asylum, separatist movements, and international law. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was a vocal advocate for the creation of an independent Sikh state, was killed in British Columbia in what Canadian officials have labeled a targeted attack.

India has long accused Canada of not taking enough action against Sikh separatist groups operating on its soil. Canada, on the other hand, maintains that it is committed to addressing security threats while upholding the rights of its citizens. The escalating tension could have far-reaching implications for diplomatic relations across the globe.

The situation continues to develop as international actors urge calm and cooperation.
