New York Knicks Trade Deadline Preview – What They Need and Potential Targets

January 29, 2025 - by Jande David - Leave a Comment

As the New York Knicks approach the February 6 trade deadline with a solid 31-16 record, attention shifts to what moves they might make to further improve their already impressive roster. With the second-best offense in the league, the Knicks have positioned themselves as one of the top contenders, but there’s always room for improvement. Their big moves from past seasons have largely shaped their current roster, yet there are still opportunities to bolster the team, particularly in terms of depth and defense.

The Knicks’ core has already been strengthened through significant acquisitions. After adding OG Anunoby last season, the team also landed Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns in separate blockbuster trades during the offseason. These moves have helped solidify the team’s foundation, but now, heading into the trade deadline, the focus is on enhancing the supporting cast. With key players like Bridges, Josh Hart, Anunoby, and Jalen Brunson logging heavy minutes, New York could certainly use some additional two-way players to add depth and versatility, especially for the bench.

While the Knicks’ offense has held up well against top-tier competition, their defense has struggled against the league’s best. Before their dominant win over the Memphis Grizzlies—one of their most impressive performances of the season—New York’s defense had allowed 125 points per 100 possessions against the top 10 teams in terms of point differential, ranking as the second-worst in the league in this category. This vulnerability highlights the need for defensive reinforcements, particularly those who can contribute on both ends of the floor.

In terms of assets, the Knicks aren’t in a position to make big trades involving high draft picks or young talent, as much of their trade capital was already used to acquire the players that form the core of the team today. However, the team still has some valuable assets at its disposal, including eight second-round picks. While second-round picks don’t typically yield star players, they can be used effectively to add depth or acquire solid rotation players. In recent weeks, players like Dennis Schroder, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Nick Richards were traded for without involving a first-round pick, suggesting that New York could make strategic moves to reinforce its roster.

Ultimately, while the Knicks’ starting lineup is strong, the right trade could help elevate the team’s chances even further. As the deadline looms, the front office will be keeping an eye on potential targets that can improve both the offense and defense, ensuring the Knicks are ready to compete at the highest level for the remainder of the season. Whether through minor tweaks or a strategic move for additional bench depth, the team is looking to position itself as a more formidable contender.
