Madonna shared an emotional tribute to her daughter Mercy James as she celebrated her 19th birthday. The iconic singer reflected on the special bond she shares with Mercy and recalled the moment they first met in Malawi when Mercy was just a baby. In a heartfelt post on Instagram Stories, Madonna opened up about the adoption process and the challenges she faced before bringing Mercy into her family.
“Happy Birthday Chifundo-AKA-Mercy James! You are such a special soul,” Madonna wrote, touching on the emotional journey that led to their connection. She shared the memory of meeting Mercy as a tiny baby, under a mosquito net in an orphanage, where she was struggling with malaria. Despite her fragile health at the time, Madonna noted that Mercy pulled through, a testament to her resilience from the very beginning. Madonna recalled whispering to her, promising that she would do everything in her power to give her a home.
The journey to adoption was long and difficult. Madonna highlighted the legal battles she fought in Malawi’s Supreme Court, where the law at the time made it difficult for divorced women to adopt children. After years of perseverance, Madonna was finally able to bring Mercy home at the age of 4 ½. However, when Mercy arrived, she was silent and withdrawn, with her hand in her mouth, not speaking to anyone. Madonna, however, saw the potential in her, and over the years, Mercy grew into a kind, compassionate person with a heart full of love.
Madonna expressed deep admiration for Mercy’s artistic talents, calling her a gifted musician and accomplished photographer. She also praised Mercy’s wisdom and maturity, describing her as the most sensible of all her children. “You are the one that everyone goes to for advice, or a shoulder to cry on,” Madonna wrote, emphasizing how Mercy holds a special place in the hearts of everyone around her, especially her own. As the years have passed, the bond between mother and daughter has only grown stronger, and Madonna’s love for Mercy shines through in every word of her tribute.
