Connor McCaffrey, an assistant coach for the Butler Bulldogs men’s basketball team and the longtime boyfriend of WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark, has been relieved of his duties following a controversial public comment regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The dismissal, confirmed by the university on Wednesday stems from a social media post made by McCaffrey earlier this week. While the exact content of the post has been deleted, sources indicate it contained a polarizing statement defending a recent high-profile ICE operation that has been widely criticized by immigrant advocacy groups. The comment quickly drew intense backlash online, with critics calling it insensitive and misinformed.
Butler University Athletics issued a brief statement, saying, “After reviewing the situation, Butler Athletics and the men’s basketball program have decided to part ways with Connor McCaffrey, effective immediately. Our values as an institution prioritize respect, inclusivity, and responsible representation. Comments that do not align with these core principles cannot be condoned.”
McCaffrey, the son of former Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffrey, joined Butler’s staff just last year after a playing career at Iowa. He has not yet made a public statement regarding his dismissal.
The incident thrusts the 26-year-old into an unwanted national spotlight, separate from the fame associated with his relationship with Caitlin Clark. Clark, the NCAA’s all-time scoring leader and the No. 1 WNBA draft pick, has not commented on the situation. The focus now shifts to McCaffrey’s future in coaching and how this controversy will impact his career trajectory following a swift and decisive termination from his first major coaching role.
