Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna were once known for their close friendship, but a new biography reveals that their bond quietly unraveled after a tense encounter that marked the end of their relationship. Their friendship had started decades earlier, long before Paltrow became a household name. Back in the late 1980s, when Gwyneth was a student at the elite Spence School in New York City, her father, TV producer Bruce Paltrow, was concerned about her smoking habit. In a thoughtful gesture, he reached out to a friend who happened to be connected to Madonna through her then-husband, Sean Penn. That chain of communication resulted in Madonna sending young Gwyneth a handwritten note encouraging her to quit smoking. It was a light, uplifting message that hinted at a future connection between the two.
As Paltrow’s career blossomed, the women grew closer, especially during the years she lived in London with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. They were often seen attending fitness sessions together, dressed in workout gear, and seemed to enjoy a strong camaraderie. But according to Odell’s book—based on interviews with over 220 sources—their friendship hit a wall during a holiday getaway. What followed made things worse. Madonna insisted the couple join her for a large group dinner. During the meal, Madonna allegedly launched into an intense tirade directed at her daughter, Lourdes. Both Gwyneth and Chris were reportedly disturbed by the behavior. Chris is said to have told Gwyneth, “I can’t be around this woman anymore. She’s awful,” to which Gwyneth agreed, calling Madonna toxic and choosing to walk away from the friendship.
