Westlife Podcast in a Biopic Coming in 2025 Will Tell the Story Behind the Music, Set for Official Release in November

July 4, 2025 - by Daniel Terkula - Leave a Comment

In a thrilling announcement that has sent waves of excitement through pop music circles around the globe, legendary Irish boyband Westlife is set to unveil a groundbreaking biopic and accompanying podcast series in November 2025. Titled “Flying Without Wings: The Westlife Story”, this multifaceted project will chronicle the band’s meteoric rise, their personal and professional struggles, and the legacy they’ve built over more than two decades in the music industry.

This marks the first time Westlife is diving deep into the full scope of their journey — not just the highs of chart-topping singles and sold-out arenas, but also the unseen moments that shaped their lives behind the scenes.

A Long-Awaited Biopic

Directed by acclaimed Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson, best known for Room and Normal People, the biopic promises an intimate, emotional, and honest portrayal of Westlife’s journey. From their early days in Sligo and Dublin, when they were just a group of ambitious teenagers with big dreams, to their global stardom and eventual split in 2012, and triumphant reunion in 2018 — the film will leave no stone unturned.

The biopic is reported to feature exclusive interviews with the band’s four current members — Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, and Mark Feehily — as well as archival footage, behind-the-scenes clips, and reenacted dramatizations of key moments in the band’s history. According to insiders, the film will even delve into the departure of original member Brian McFadden in 2004, a chapter the band has rarely discussed in depth.

In a recent Instagram post, Shane Filan wrote:
“This is the story we’ve never fully told — not just the Westlife that fans saw on stage, but the one that lived through real-life struggles, joy, and growth. We’re so proud of what’s coming.”

A Companion Podcast: “Westlife: Behind the Music”

Alongside the biopic, fans will be treated to a 10-episode companion podcast series, hosted by music journalist and longtime Westlife supporter Louise Duffy. The podcast, titled “Westlife: Behind the Music”, will drop weekly episodes starting one month prior to the biopic’s premiere.

Each episode will explore a different era or theme in the band’s history — from the Simon Cowell years and their dominance of the UK charts in the early 2000s, to their experimentation with maturity in albums like Gravity and Spectrum. Listeners can expect candid conversations, never-before-heard audio diaries, and in-depth analysis of the band’s musical evolution.

Industry insiders have described the podcast as “a deep dive for true fans, but accessible enough for anyone curious about the anatomy of a pop phenomenon.”

Why 2025?

This year marks the 26th anniversary of Westlife’s debut single, “Swear It Again,” which topped charts in the UK and launched a career that would eventually span over 55 million records sold worldwide. The band is also celebrating their 2025 world tour, dubbed the Westlife: Timeless Tour, which is expected to coincide with the podcast launch and culminate with the film’s release.

In an era when many bands fade into nostalgia, Westlife has remained surprisingly relevant — thanks to a combination of their timeless ballads, fiercely loyal fanbase, and strategic reinventions. Their return in 2018 with Hello My Love and later releases showed that they still had something fresh to offer in a shifting musical landscape.

A Cultural Legacy

Westlife’s contribution to pop music goes far beyond catchy choruses and synchronized stool rises. As one of Ireland’s most successful music acts, their journey mirrors the highs and lows of fame in a pre-social media world. Their clean-cut image, harmonies, and romantic ballads became the soundtrack to countless lives in the early 2000s. Yet behind the scenes, the band members were facing personal battles, evolving relationships, and navigating the often harsh world of pop stardom.

According to director Lenny Abrahamson, this duality is central to the upcoming film:
“The Westlife story is as much about music as it is about resilience, friendship, and identity. It’s a human story at heart — and that’s what we want to show.”

Final Thoughts

Westlife’s upcoming biopic and podcast represent more than just a media release — they’re a celebration of a band that defined a generation and continues to shape pop culture today. As the world prepares to revisit the heartwarming melodies and powerful stories behind songs like Flying Without Wings, My Love, and World of Our Own, one thing is clear: Westlife is far from finished writing their story.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a curious newcomer, Flying Without Wings: The Westlife Story promises to be a nostalgic, revealing, and deeply human experience — one that finally tells the whole story behind the music.
